This paper examines the use of metaphors in arguments in 1 Clement by looking at the specific examples of life journey and competition metaphors. By employing two conceptual metaphors LIFE IS A PATH and LIFE IS A COMPETITION, the author of 1 Clement argues that the Corinthians should eliminate their strife and repent and return to their former way of life. First Clement uses the conceptualizing potential of those metaphors and their silent presuppositions to accomplish this goal. Whereas life-journey metaphors are scattered throughout the epistle and constitute a consistent picture, the competition metaphor is concentrated in 1 Clem 5:1–7:1. The study of the passages containing these metaphors illuminates their argumentative power.
