Abstract

This paper examines the impact of the elevation angle on the accuracy of azimuth angle estimation using the phase comparison method. Additionally, it proposes a technique to reduce the overall estimation error. The phase comparison method provides an unambiguous angle of arrival estimation when the distance between two antennas is less than half the wavelength of the input signal. Depending on the dimensional arrangement of the antenna array, both the azimuth and elevation angles can be measured. The elevation angle directly affects the phase difference used to estimate the azimuth angle. When the elevation angle is unknown in the azimuth estimation equation, estimation errors arise and vary depending on the actual elevation angle. These errors can be minimized by considering an estimation of possible elevation values.
