Abstract

In recent decades, the Andwa Nationality of Ecuador, a bilingual Indigenous group in Spanish and Kichwa, has embarked on revitalizing its ancestral language, known as Katsakati, as part of a process of political reorganization and ethnic redefinition. Once considered “extinct,” the Katsakati language is being documented and reintroduced in Andwa communities, especially to younger generations through the official education system. This study presents the findings from the first sociolinguistic survey in Andwa territory, examining the complex dynamics of language shift, attitudes, and revitalization. Drawing from quantitative and qualitative data, the article offers an in-depth description and analysis of the linguistic repertoires of Andwa communities, focusing on speakerhood and self-assessed linguistic proficiency in Spanish, Kichwa, and Katsakati, as well as their relation with age and education. The paper also examines linguistic attitudes and their connections to demographic and linguistic factors, shedding light on the opportunities and challenges of Indigenous-language revitalization initiatives.
