Abstract

Following avulsion caused by a traumatic dental injury, the duration and circumstances of extraoral storage are crucial for the prognosis of tooth survival after replantation. If complications occur that result in tooth extraction, it is important to find individualized solutions especially for adolescent patients. This case report presents an 11-year-old patient who had run into a tree while playing in the garden of his parents' house resulting in avulsion of tooth 22. Despite prompt emergency care and initiation of endodontic treatment, posttraumatic complications occurred. In this case report, the role of damage to the periodontal ligament cells during and following dental trauma as well as the possible influence of the erupting permanent canine on resorption processes are discussed. As a result of good interdisciplinary collaboration between restorative dentists and orthodontists, a successful individualized treatment concept was realized for the young patient.
