Abstract

As a central ecosystem service provided by forests, the recreational function contributes significantly to human well-being. However, in endeavours towards a sustainable forest in climate change, its importance for human well-being is underrepresented in both scientific and political discussions. Our article analyses the central function of forests for human health. In addition, we provide an overview of current conflicts of use between the recreational function and other functions. Our study is based on guided interviews with 22 experts in the city and district of Bamberg who have a professional connection to the topic of climate resilience and land use. The Bamberg region in Upper Franconia is due to the surrounding mountain ranges (Hassberge, Steigerwald and Franconian Alb) well suited for our study, as it is also very important for local recreation.
