Abstract

This chapter provides an introduction to cinematic forms of representing Auschwitz, covering both documentary and fiction films. It takes a largely historical approach, situating individual films in their cultural contexts as well as in the academic discussions relating to them. Works covered in this survey come from many countries directly affected by the Holocaust, including Poland, Germany, France, Italy, the US and others. Films are grouped by thematic aspects (for instance, the choices between victimhood and agency), such as the ethics of representation, by generic form and the role of the films’ protagonists with respect to Auschwitz, including survivors, perpetrators and people born into later generations.
