Abstract
Abstract: Polyvinyl butyral (PVB) is a polymer widely used in various industries. However, it is susceptible to corrosion in harsh environments. This study investigated the effects of adding polymethylhydrosiloxane (PMHS) and Mg(OH)2 nanoparticles on the corrosion resistance of PVB coatings deposited on mild steel by spin coating. Various analytical techniques including SEM, FTIR, EDS, and water contact angle were also employed to assess the properties of the coatings. In addition, the electrochemical OCP, EIS and Tafel polarization studies were conducted in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution. According to the results, the PVB-PMHS coatings produced with 10 v/v%, 20 v/v% PMHS, or 30 v/v% PMHS were crack-free and had a uniform thickness. Moreover, increasing the amount of PMHS coating enhanced the hydrophobicity of the PVB matrix. It therefore improved the corrosion resistance of the coatings by shifting the OCP plots toward the positive values (from − 0.695 V for the substrate to − 0.506 V for the 30 v/v% PMHS-containing coating). Meanwhile, the corrosion current density decreased from 15.8 µA/cm2 to 0.083 µA/cm2. The data highlighted that 30 v/v% PMHS was the optimum concentration to produce a PVB-PMHS layer with the highest corrosion resistance. The composite coating was also produced by adding 1 g/l Mg(OH)2 nanoparticles to the PVB-PMHS layer. This increased the corrosion properties of the polymer coating by 2 times increasing the charge transfer and polarization resistance. After 7 days of immersion in the corrosive electrolyte, no corrosion products were observed on the surface of the composite coating.
