Abstract

Perioperative myocardial infarction (PMI) is a major cause of short- and longtime morbidity and mortality in non-cardiac surgery. Also diagnosing a myocardial infarction perioperatively is clinically as well as electrocardiographically and by enzyme kinetics markedly complicated. The Cornerstone of the management of a PMI is its prevention. This article reviews the pathophsiology and diagnosis of a PMI, the identification of risk factors and the prevention as well as possible treatment options of a myocardial infarction in the perioperative phase. © 2009.
