The article discusses the available evidence on the architectural form, dating and cultic significance of the literarily attested monumental altar of Hermocreon in Parion. It focuses on a little studied passage in Straboʼs Geographika who states that the construction of the altar was accompanied by a complete transfer of building material and furnishings from the abandoned oracle of Adrasteia. On the basis of this tradition, the article explores how the reuse of a sanctuary-essentially a conventional means of recycling building materials while at the same time preserving divine property-may have been perceived and commemorated more broadly and how it thus contributed to the shaping of Hellenistic and Early Imperial sacred landscapes.
