Abstract

This article investigates predictors of computer and internet usage at the workplace. It also engages with the impact of these forms of information and communication technology (ICT) usage on job quality. The article fills the existing research gap using the German subsample of the European Working Conditions Survey (EWCS). The analyses show that occupational groups substantially shape ICT usage and that self-employed respondents without employees use ICT more often. Employees that use ICT more often report a slightly better labour market position, increased opportunities for employee involvement, as well as increased pressures at the workplace. The article identifies the basic contours of digital workplaces. It also shows that job quality does not simply improve or decline as it is reconfigured under the influence of ICT.
