Abstract

Possible joint failure must be taken into account when optimizing bodywork design with regard to crash resistance. This study shows a method to determine load capacity values for body-in-white spot-welded joints. Therefore a mathematical model based on experimental data was developed. Furthermore, it was intended to identify where and when spot weld cracks could occur when high tensile strength steels are used. This should be done by compliance with conventional modeling techniques in finite element simulation of vehicles.
