The present report examines ethics consultations carried out at a German University Hospital in cases involving neonatal patients in the last ten years since the formation of the Clinical Ethics Committee in 2002. Documentation created resulting from bedside consultations were used as a basis for this examination and also reports from the following sessions of the Clinical Ethics Committee with associated discussions of the neonatal cases. Typical ethical problems are introduced and elaborated, changes in approach which have occurred during this period are reflected, and comparisons are made with data from other neonatal departments and the current state of research in the literature. Issues particular to ethics consultations in neonatology are examined in detail and finally the manner of operation of this Clinical Ethics Committee is demonstrated by means of example cases.
