Abstract

Advanced endoscopic imaging with virtual histology has become clinical reality since the introduction of confocal laser endomicroscopy (CLE) in 2004. In the meantime, various studies have shown the explicit potential of CLE for the diagnosis and characterization of different disease entities, including IBD. In this review, we will focus on the basic concepts of endomicroscopy and its increasing potential in IBD.
