In recent years, the fascial system has attracted increased scientific and clinical attention. It has been attributed potential roles in training and performance, as well as in the development of musculoskeletal injuries and disorders. Therefore, the proper application of a precise and unambiguous nomenclature of the fascial system is essential for interdisciplinary and interprofessional communication. However, the terminology of fascia differs profoundly between countries and medical disciplines. This concerns the definition of the term “fascia” as well as the question of how to officially denominate the various fasciae of the human body. Especially the terms “superficial fascia” (“Fascia superficialis”) and “deep fascia” (“Fascia profunda”) have been defined very differently within the international community of medical professionals. The present article represents a narrational review highlighting some of the tender spots of misunderstanding while dealing with differing concepts of the fascial system. It also proposes a feasible solution to this general problem of conflicting terminologies.
