Aim The aim of the study was the assessment of older people's use of public reporting and clarification of whether this can contribute to quality improvements in nursing homes. Method A paper-based survey of 57 residents of three nursing homes in the state of Baden-Wuerttemberg, Germany was conducted. Data collection included socio demographic information, the knowledge and use of information on comparison portals, and the selection behavior of participants. Results In total, 66.7 % of participants did not know that there is online information on quality, 57.9 % would not trust such information, and 21.1 % would re-evaluate their decision based on online information. Conclusion Older people alone do not use public reporting. Thus, the goal of quality improvement cannot be achieved. Further efforts are required to educate various stakeholder groups on the benefits of public reporting and the importance of joint selection of nursing homes.
