Abstract

Abstract. The paper investigates the hypothesis that in the East Franconian dialect, an augmented

referent concept is predominantly expressed by the grammatical construction [noun1 + noun2].

We show data suggesting that large physical size or strength of a referent is predominantly

expressed by the grammatical construction [noun1 + noun2], while the concepts of smallness or

weakness are expressed mainly by the construction [adj + noun]. To identify the theoretical

status of the construction, we contrast our corpus data of the type ein Brocken Mannsbild ‘a big

man’ with similar constructions of German and conclude that nouns like Brocken ‘chunk’ are

augmentative modifiers, a conclusion supported by a picture-matching task. The study is situated

at the interface between dialect lexicography and psycholinguistics.
