Abstract

Indigoid chromophores are an emerging class of photoswitches that combine the advantages of intrinsic visible-light responsiveness and rigid, precise geometry changes with considerable photochromism and efficient switching properties. In this chapter synthesis, photophysical and chemical properties as well as applications of the most prominent indigo, thioindigo, hemiindigo, hemithioindigo, iminothioindoxyl, and oxindole-based photoswitches are covered. The applications range from photocontrol of supramolecular recognition, chiroptics, or biological properties to optical computing and advanced molecular machinery. Indigoid chromophores have thus been established as highly valuable light-responsive tools expanding the possibilities to manipulate matter at the smallest scales with utmost precision.
