Abstract

As we witness emergent wars and conflicts, it is important to address peace and peacebuilding issues in art education. The goal of promoting peace through education and art has long been advocated by education philosophers and art educators. Policy mandates such as UNESCO’s Seoul Agenda: Goals for the Development of Arts Education suggest the use of art education to resolve social and cultural challenges, such as supporting the reconstruction and restoration efforts of post-conflict societies to promote peace. This chapter provides insight into (i) the multidimensional concept of peace and the use of art in peace symbolism and anti-war art; (ii) peacebuilding processes and how art interventions within the United Kingdom and, internationally, contribute toward specific goals in peacebuilding and reconciliation; (iii) critical perspectives such as the difference between art appropriation and cultural appropriation in using art and symbolism from diverse cultures and the distinction between teaching art about peace and peacebuilding and art for peace and peacebuilding; (iv) strategies such as scaffolding and addressing contested and culturally sensitive issues in class, and (v) activity examples in the classroom and community for addressing peace and peacebuilding issues in art education.
