Abstract

The study performs an in-depth investigation of new product development (NPD) in digital startups. It is informed by process theory highlighting the sequence of stages in which NPD is advanced. Using a multiple-case study design, the study shows how common process models are implemented in digital startups and contextualized. Contrary to the prevailing view in the extant literature on NPD in startup companies, the findings demonstrate a high degree of completeness and quality of the NPD process in digital startups and purposive decision-making about deviations. Collecting best practices, the study makes recommendations for implementing NPD and lays the groundwork for better theory with important implications for today’s digital economy.
