Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is one of the cardiovascular risk factors for which the prevalence and incidence have increased worldwide in recent years. There are currently some 537 million people worldwide who suffer from diabetes mellitus. This disease with the diabetic foot syndrome also represents a challenge for the treating vascular surgeon. The diagnostics of a possible simultaneously present peripheral arterial occlusive disease (PAOD) represent a particularly difficult challenge in the routine practice. The question of the treatment of this PAOD is also not trivial. The question is on the timing of the treatment and the selection of the treatment procedure. This article first gives an overview of the diagnostic options for PAOD in cases of diabetes mellitus. Finally, the results of the various treatment options are presented and classified in the clinical context.
