Forms of address have always been subject to different levels of variation throughout the history and the dialectology of the Spanish language, especially in Classical (or Siglo de Oro) Spanish. Their pragmatic, socio-discursive and cultural implications make of forms of address a system in “crisis” (Hummel, 2020), whose values are determined and updated during the conversation. Here, we present the progress made by recent research in this subject area and we apply it to the teaching/learning of the Spanish language: to do so, we propose a didactic text-based approach, which can be useful both in the Spanish class in secondary education of Spanishspeaking countries and in the class of SFL. The text chosen for discussing these linguistic problems is a fragment from the book series Las aventuras del capitán Alatriste, which depicts the use of forms of address in the seventeenth century language. The analysis methodology demonstrates that, with the appropriate adaptations and starting from the appropriate texts, almost any philological and/or linguistic-theoretical problem can be addressed for learning in secondary education and in SFL courses.
