The type of neutral point treatement (NPT) influences the voltage and current fault characteristics of ground faults significantly and therefore the stress on equipement and components. Moreover, the selection of protection principles and the operation of protection devices is influenced by the type of NPT. Power electronic converters, especially voltage source converters (VSCs), are key components of future grids and their grid penetration is rising. Today, VSCs are not able to fulfill the requirements of NPT.
In this paper, operating principles of direct-connected VSCs in the zero sequence and options for NPT are presented. Different types of NPT are realized by the VSC-controller. The fault characteristics, included by the VSC, are analyzed and compared to conventional fault characteristics. The presented principles are based on an extended hardware configuration and advanced software algorithms. The proposed solution provides higher flexibility and lower stress on equipment compared to conventional solutions. Theoretical considerations are presented and validated vie EMT simulations in MATLAB/Simulink.
