Children are at a disadvantage compared to adults when it comes to drug therapy. In the paediatric inpatient sector, up to 90 % of all medicines are being used offlabel, i. e. outside of the scope of the license. This results in a special need for scientifically sound information in order to be able to carry out rational pharmacotherapy according to the current scientific knowledge. Kinderformularium.DE is a web-based platform with evidence-based information for drug therapy in children and adolescents. The core of the database are monographs of active substances with dosing recommendations for the on- and off-label therapy. Additional information is provided, i a., on commercial formulations suitable for children, the licensing status and other child-specific information relevant for safe drug therapy. The content addresses medical and pharmaceutical professionals and is free of charge. The information provided on the platform is independent of industry and is maintained by a project team at the Department of Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine of the University Hospital Erlangen, Germany. The platform is a result of the "Action Plan to Improve Medication Safety in Germany" (Aktionsplan zur Verbesserung der Arzneimitteltherapiesicherheit in Deutschland) of the Federal Ministry of Health (funding period: 2016 to 2022). Through international cooperation with the Netherlands, Austria and Norway, synergies are used to develop paediatric dosing recommendations based on the best available evidence and to harmonise them internationally. Results of a user survey and continually increasing user numbers demonstrate the relevance of the database in healthcare practice. Kinderformularium.DE aims to improve long-term medication safety in children of all ages by providing scientifically sound, practically applicable information.
