The present article gives an overview of current research on goals of psychotherapy clients. It mainly focuses on four aspects: (1) basic research on personal goals, (2) general life goals of clients and how they relate to psychopathology, (3) explicit treatment goals, (4) goal-centered psychotherapeutic interventions. The major aims of the article are to show how basic research has influenced clinical research and to illustrate the therapeutic implications of these findings. © 2006 Springer Medizin Verlag.
