Abstract

Background: In order to best use patients' motivational resources psychotherapeutic health care and treatment planning should be aligned with the patients' treatment goals. To this end, it is necessary to identify what patients want to attain in which treatment phase and setting. Methods: Patients' treatment goals for inpatient and following outpatient treatment were assessed and categorized according to the Bern Inventory of Treatment Goals (BIT-T) in a sample of 242 inpatients who received cognitive-behavior therapy and planned to undergo subsequent outpatient psychotherapy. Inpatient treatment goals were assessed both at the beginning and at the end of therapy. Results: Relative frequencies of BIT-T goal categories differed only little or moderately between the three assessment conditions. At all three conditions patients had mostly - but not exclusively - symptom-oriented goals or goals that referred to clinically relevant problems. Conclusion: Institutions in charge of inpatient and outpatient psychotherapeutic health care have to take into account that patients primarily want to achieve changes regarding their symptoms and clinically relevant problems. © 2004 S.
