Abstract

This article will focus on images in journalistic contexts. From modern, mostly Christian interpretations of the image ban, I will draw positive inspiration for the use of such news images. Thus, the focus is primarily on finding orientation rather than on describing situations, structures, and problems, which already has been done in other works on image ethics. [i] I will not primarily inquire into the norms implied in those references to the image ban, but into the goods protected by them (sections 3–4). On the way to that goal, I will first describe the need for ethical thinking about news images (1)—and specify why and how Public Theology should, in my view, approach the prohibition of images (2).
