Thin yet strong membranes for polymer electrolyte fuel cells are currently widely researched because they combine low ionic resistance with satisfying fuel cell life-times. In this transaction we review our latest efforts in this direction, and present a fast and simple method for manufacturing chemically and mechanically reinforced polymer electrolyte membranes with thicknesses as low as 12 μm.
