Inner city living is a hot topic. Whether celebrated as an aurban renaissance" and re-urbanization or criticized as gentrification, the interest that developers, investors and buyers currently have for inner-city locations is part of the ongoing urban restructuring of European and US-American cities. In addition to processes of re-investment and displacement currently restructuring the city, the aurban renaissance" also has brought forth a powerful take on the meaning of city life and urbanity. In particular, high-priced luxury developments in inner city areas currently modify ideas about urban livability and about legitimate city users and usages. The article analyzes recent inner city luxury developments in Berlin and Los Angeles as a built form of current discourses on re-urbanization and urban lifestyles.
