The Covid-19 pandemic and its political handling affect several areas of social life. This article aims to undertake a balancing of interests in regard to seriously ill children and their families as a vulnerable group in order to ethically reflect political decisions. The features of pediatric palliative care in comparison to other medical fields and its focus on the relief of "Total Pain" by Cicely Saunders are elaborated. On the basis of a case history it can be seen that pediatric palliative care is faced with extraordinary challenges by the complex impact the pandemic has on physical, psychological, social and spiritual dimensions of affected families. Also, it is illustrated that families who need pediatric palliative care can be seen as a vulnerable group regarding the Covid-19 pandemic and why a balancing of interests becomes necessary. A subsequent ethical discussion will undertake such a balancing of interests in confinement of uncertainty and expand on the issue of the political situation as a "tragical dilemma".
