Abstract

In this paper we investigate alternative solvents for dissolving Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) to substitute harmful N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) in the manufacturing process of Lithium-Nickel-Cobalt-Manganese-Oxide (NCM) electrodes. Therefore NCM cathodes are prepared using Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and Triethyl phosphate (TEP) based slurries. With these electrodes cells against graphite anodes are set up and tested in three ways: Current pulses, discharge current rate and cyclic aging. The comparison of the test results with conventionally NMP-processed electrodes indicate that the substitution of NMP by DMSO or TEP does not involve any serious drawbacks.
