Abstract

Supply chain resilience (SCRES) has become a promising approach to ensure a proper flow of goods and materials in the presence of increasing complexity, uncertainty and vulnerability of globe-spanning supply chains. The antecedents and drivers of SCRES, and especially cross-disciplinary relationships, however, still represent a gap in the field of supply chain management research. Therefore, in line with the IPSERA 2022 conference theme to build bridges rather than walls, this paper connects two distinct but related, previously unconnected research fields within the conference stream of supply chain risk and resilience. More precisely, this empirically validated study combines research on corporate entrepreneurship (CE) and SCRES to better explain how to achieve competitive advantage in changing market conditions. Thus, this discipline-bridging paper examines the following research question to enhance the understanding of supply chain interrelationships:

How does corporate entrepreneurship affect a company’s degree of supply chain resilience and thereby the ability to achieve superior business performance in dynamic environments?

To answer this question, the authors conduct a review on CE and SCRES literature. In this context, CE aims to create an entrepreneurial orientation within existing firms that can be characterized as a multidimensional construct of innovativeness, proactiveness, risk-taking, autonomy and competitive aggressiveness. CE is assumed to be a key enabler of competitive advantage by identifying, implementing and encouraging new and innovative ways to cope with environmental uncertainty. At the same time, SCRES has been widely acknowledged to positively influence business performance (BP) in dynamic and competitive landscapes and in case of unexpected supply chain disruptions. Hence, we develop a model that combines CE and SCRES to analyze its relationships and influence on BP involving both financial and broader commercial criteria. It is investigated whether entrepreneurial activities inject new and innovative responses to disruptive supply chain events and create new sources of competitive advantage.

To provide evidence for the hypothesized relationships between CE, SCRES and BP, the conceptual model is validated with empirical data. For this purpose, the authors conduct a survey and apply structural equation modeling on data collected from more than 100 international companies operating in a diverse range of industries. We find significant path coefficients for all hypothesized relationships. Therefore, we find support for the hypotheses that appropriate CE initiatives strengthen SCRES and foster BP. These results can encourage practitioners to pursue entrepreneurial activities to mitigate disturbances by enhancing SCRES, recover from disruptions faster than competitors, and ultimately improve BP. From a theoretical point of view, this paper advances CE and SCRES research by combining two different research streams to provide new insights about the interrelationships and facilitate innovative supply chain management.
