Abstract

Introduction: Sleep disorders or disturbed sleep as well as cancer-related ratigue (CrF) are very common in various types of cancer, but their prevalence and incidence are not known. Both disturbed sleep and fatigue have a variety of causes and usually appear as a comorbid disorder in various somatic and psychiatric diagnoses, mental disorders, and treatments. There can be many different predictors of disturbed sleep and tumor-related fatigue, such as pre-existing insomnias, caused by the psychological status of cancer and/or as a side effect of cancer treatment; but even chronobiological aspects have to be considered in this context. Materials and methods: A systematic literature review on chronobiology, sleep, disturbed sleep, and CrF in cancer patients was carried out, and 1,856 studies were evaluated. The articles were identified through PubMed, PsycInfo, and Web of Knowledge; a total of 36 publications were included in the analysis. Results: A total number of 36 studies on sleep/ chronobiology and fatigue in cancer were identified; 25 of them on sleep and CrF, and 11 of them on chronobiology and CrF were analyzed. Generally, the prevalence of sleep disorders in cancer was up to 95%. Discussion: Our review found that disturbed sleep and insomnia in cancer patients can be predicted for very different reasons. Side effects of cancer treatment and cancer-related mental disorders can cause sleep disorders, especially insomnia and CrF, in these patients. Personalized cancer treatment would be needed to improve the mental and/or physical condition of these patients.
