The goal of the current study was to create a database of movie excerpts with descriptive data of their motivational content. A total sample of 20 movie clips of about 30 min each were selected from various motion pictures and documentaries that contain either (a) cues predominantly related to one motive, (b) cues related to multiple motives or (c) no or a minimum of motive imagery content. Adapting guidelines provided by Winter (1994) and using new software, the MovieMotiveCoder (Walther et al., 2016), six trained coders independently coded all excerpts for achievement, affiliation, and power motive imagery in the visual, auditory, and audiovisual channels. Satisfactory interrater reliability could be achieved for all motives and on all coding channels, suggesting that movies can be coded reliably. We present the motive content of the individual movie excerpts and make recommendations with regard to applications of coding motives in audiovisual material and the suitability of specific movies in future studies on motivation.
