Abstract

The analysis of population development at county and city level between 1961 and 2019 shows that in the period up to 2004 the policy of fostering a system of central places tended to diminish spatial disparities between the countryside and cities. But since 2004, the countryside has again suffered major problems. This situation calls for a new political instrument, "endogenous regional development", to prevent the emergence of large conurbations on one hand and thinly populated peripheries on the other hand.
