Outsourcing describes the execution and management of activities or functions by external specialized service providers and includes both material goods and services. As today's complex value networks continue to extend globally, the process of logistics outsourcing remains an increasingly important issue. In particular, the transport of goods to link the nodes of networks and ensure seamless production activities is crucial. This article presents a holistic picture of the outsourcing of logistics functions to service providers and deals in particular with the development and structure of outsourcing and its individual process steps. The motivation for outsourcing is outlined by identifying advantages and enablers. In addition, this article shows which risks need to be considered both for the decision and for the management of outsourcing projects. Finally, external factors influencing the market environment are discussed.
