This paper describes two different approaches to teaching French as a foreign language currently followed by 11 elementary schools in the federal state of Bavaria, Germany. Children aged six years or older either learn French in about two 45-minute lessons per week or they start to learn French in a German-French bilingual program starting in grade 1.
The paper presents the first results of a study examining how children of different age groups learning French in about two lessons per week performed in tasks examining their French language skills after one year of learning French in elementary school. The results indicate that all children acquired skills in French, while performing better in tasks examining their listening comprehension and their speaking skills than in a task examining their reading skills. No significant differences were found between the results obtained by boys and girls and those obtained by children growing up in a monolingual or multilingual context.
