Abstract

Surface coating is one of the most effective measures for reducing friction losses in combustion engines. High potential exists, for example, in the tribological contact between the tappet and the camshaft in the valve train. In this article, Schaeffler presents a nanostructured tribocatalytic PVD coating system made of molybdenum that forms protective tribofilms on the stressed surface.
