In this paper, power allocation for energy-efficient point-to-point machine-to-machine (M2M) communication systems with multiple energy harvesting sources is studied. Under a deterministic system setting, we formulate the power allocation problem as a non-convex optimization problem over a finite horizon taking into account the circuit energy consumption, finite battery storage capacities, and a minimum required data rate. The considered non-convex optimization problem is transformed into a convex optimization problem by exploiting the properties of fractional programming which results in an efficient optimal off-line iterative power allocation algorithm. In each iteration, the transformed problem is solved by using dual decomposition and a recursive power allocation solution is obtained for maximization of the energy efficiency of data transmission (bit/Joule delivered to the receiver). © 2012 IEEE.
