Abstract

The effectiveness of renal denervation to reduce blood pressure has been controversially discussed. After a few uncontrolled pilot studies had shown promising results with respect to the effectiveness of this method, the results of the Symplicity HTN-3 study were discouraging: no significant difference in blood pressure reduction between denervation and sham group could be observed. The results of three sham-controlled studies were finally able to prove the effectiveness of renal denervation: in comparison to sham-procedure, a significant office and 24-h ambulatory blood pressure reduction could be achieved. The findings obtained from these studies provide interesting future perspectives with respect to the application of the technique in other diseases and patients that profit most from renal denervation.
