Abstract

The sea with its tides offers great potential for technical applications for energy generation. Due to the high salinity, rolling and plain bearings made of conventional bearings steels (e. g. 100Cr6) are usually used under corrosionprotective lubricant conditions and require a hermetic encapsulation that prevents the contact with lquid (acqueous) ambient media. The result is an energy lost of about 30 % due to incresed friction in the encapsulated system. Sealless bearings would therefore significantly increase the overall efficiency of the bearings. However, a seal-less design of the rolling bearings requires new solution strategies that ensure the longest possible service life under harsh tribocorrosive operating conditions. One promising and ressource-saving approach is the deposition of hydrogenated amorphous carbon coatings (a-C:H) using the reactive magnetron sputtering technology in order to protect the bearings from wear and corrosion. As part of the BMWK-funded research project POSEIDON I and II, a-C:H coatings with high wear and corrosion resistance and low coatings defect densities are developed. The influences of relevant PVD process parameters, individual coating thicknesses and various doping elements of the interlayers and fuctional layers on the achievable mechanical, morphological and tribological coating properties are experimentally investigated. In particular, silicon-doped a-C:H coatings (a-C:H:Si) with Cr/CrNx interlayers show promising application potential with regard to adhesion strength, hardness, tribological properties and corrosion resistance.
