Abstract

In this paper we study travelling wave solutions of a model describing solute transport through porous media, where the chemical species undergoes adsorption, i.e. a retention /release reaction with the surface of the porous sceleton. Processes of this type are of fundamental importance in different fields: Solute transport with adsorption is the basic process of several chromatographic separation techniques, which are applied both in analytical chemistry and chemical engineering. E. g., environmental engineering uses adsorption phenomena in order to separate contaminants from (waste) water. A major concern of soil scientists and hydrologists is the mobility of plant nutrients and pollutants (heavy metals, pesticides and other organic chemicals) in soils and sediments, which is determined mainly by adsorption processes.
