There are various barriers that often prevent women in difficult life situations from engaging in at least sufficient levels of physical activity. The BIG project was developed as a community-based participatory project to improve physical activity among disadvantaged women. BIG has been successful by providing exercise classes tailored to the needs of women, empowering women by having them take part in planning processes, building community level capacity, and initiating policy and environmental changes for health promotion on the community level.
