Abstract

Objective: The aim of this paper is to analyze the status quo, the level of knowledge and the information and assistance needs of small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) in the field of occupational safety and health. Methods: The present study is based on the employer survey conducted within the model project "Working healthily in Thuringia" at the turn of the year 2017/2018, whereby a representative sample of Thuringian enterprises of all sizes and industry sectors was interviewed. The survey was designed as a cross-sectional study and was conducted online and by telephone. The data was analyzed by using descriptive statistics in SPSS® and/or various methods of quantitative social research. Results: Results indicate inadequate implementation of statutory occupational safety and health regulations, especially in small and medium-sized enterprises, as well as a knowledge deficit on the part of the management. Moreover, the need for information and assistance seems to be quite small. As a rule, micro enterprises performed worse than small and medium-sized enterprises. Results in the context of information and assistance needs as well as the assessment of the importance of assistance from a company physician or an occupational safety specialist in certain areas indicate the special needs of micro enterprises in terms of hands-on solutions. For micro enterprises, issues such as avoidance of occupational accidents seem to be more important than maternity protection or company integration management. Conclusion: First and foremost, the diverging results in terms of information and assistance needs as well as the assessment of the importance of assistance from a company physician or an occupational safety specialist in individual areas suggest that SMEs take a different view with regard to initial situation as well as specific needs.
