Since mutations with health relevance exist (2% in population with European ancestry - Amendola et al. 2015) why are these mutations not found incidentally? In contrast to med imaging, even a trained researcher cannot “see” IFs in genomic sequence. Owing to the complexity of genomic data, bioinformatic filters are necessary that avoid detection of incidental findings.
General conclusion: The debate on IFs in genomic research was a waste of cognitive, financial and psychological resources. Two steps to prevent such debates in future: 1. Early solution-development for plausible scenarios. 2. Then when empirical data is available – evaluation whether these projections remain true. The scenario has to be substantiated or, if necessary, corrected.
