Abstract

This study focusses on carbon-based sensor coatings, which allow the detection of wear by an increase in electrical resistance. Coatings comprise high- and low-resistance layers of chromium or tungsten carbide, respectively, and silicon doped amorphous carbon. In repeated scratch tests, wear could most significantly be detected in Cr-containing sensor coatings. Short circuits to the substrate necessitated a sufficient thickness of the high-resistance layer for a significant detection of the coating’s wear. In summary, the advantageous tribological behavior of DLC coatings can be expanded by a sensory function for wear detection, to ensure a prolonged and individual lifetime of DLC-coated components.
