The bio-inspired Computer Aided Internal Optimization (CAIO) method optimizes fiber orientation of composite structures by minimizing shear stresses. Fiber directions are iteratively aligned with maximum principal normal stress trajectories (MPNST). Its effectiveness was exemplarily shown by Reuschel and Mattheck (1999) using a tension-loaded plate with two holes, doubling the strength of a specimen compared to an unidirectional design. Klein (2017) uses this method in a holistic approach to composite design – and points out, to find its way into practice more, the iterative method still leaves room for further research. This is especially the case in areas of non-unique MPNST. The extended abstract scrutinizes the behavior of the method in these areas and evaluates possible solutions
