Accompanied by the frontloading efforts in product development, tolerancing becomes more and more important in early design stages. Motivated by the lack of methods for early phases of the design process, three approaches for considering tolerances in conceptual and preliminary design stages are presented in this paper. The first allows assessing the robustness of concepts with the help of a tolerance-specific FMEA. A subsequent method enables a tolerance specification and analysis based on a graphical visualization of the product structure. Furthermore, a sensitivity analysis for skeleton models is presented. By using these methods the design and tolerancing process runs simultaneously. Hence, a robust design and reliable tolerances already exist at the beginning of the detail design.
