Abstract

The friction and wear behaviour of polycrystalline diamond coatings on Ti-6Al-4V was investigated with oscillating sliding motion in contact with four different ceramic materials (Al2O3, SiC, Si3N4 und ZrO2). A ceramic ball is pressed against a flat specimen with a diamond coating which is moving periodically with small amplitudes. Diamond coatings were tested as deposited at room temperature in air of different relative humidity. Additional tests were performed with polished diamond coatings. The friction and wear behaviour of all couples depends on the humidity content of surrounding air. Low wear rates and very low coefficients of friction are found, showing distinct differences for different ceramics. Polishing of diamond leads to a further significant reduction of friction and wear.
