The term "Bildung" can be considered a basic concept of German pedagogy and as its programme at the same time. Based on criticism of the concept of Bildung and in connection with the effort to orientate pedagogy toward social sciences in the mid-1960s, the concept of Bildung was increasingly shunned. Bildungstheorie approaches, as mainly developed by Klafki, are only one family of theories besides others in a multitude of theory models.
Against this general background, this chapter will focus on the discussion about "Bildung" within the media educational discourse. It will examine to what extent General Didactics - especially Bildungstheorie didactics - is capable of contributing vitally to this sub-discipline. Along with digital media increasingly penetrating all spheres of life and also all educational institutions, the importance of determining the meaning of Bildung in relation to mediaand the way in which media can support processes of Bildung have intensified.
