A magnetic conveyor belt that transports trapped atoms to very precisely controlled positions near a surface is experimentally demonstrated. An extension of this belt allows the merging of atom clouds trapped in two adjacent Ioffe-Pritchard (IP) traps. The transfer is complete and, under suitable conditions, occurs without loss of phase space density.
